I came to read this book 'by accident'. It was posted on Facebook as finally being released. I grew up with Planaria Price, known to me as Barbara, from 5th grade through high school. My father, a painting contractor, actually painted her family home several times. I always knew Planaria/Barbara through all my school years and had a wonderful reunion with her at our 50th high school gathering. I myself had an amazing Jewish mother, who lived to be 98, who, although blessedly not a Holocaust survivor, had that amazing spirit of a Jewish matriarch that gave me a strength of life and spirit so depicted in Basia's story. This book was wonderful beyond description, a true mitzvah by all senses of the word. I myself have fallen away from Jewish faith and upbringing, but this book brought home to me so much of that heritage. I have read a great many books, fiction and non-fiction about the holocaust and survivors, but this book is so intensely personal in its story, I was rapt in reading it and will undoubtedly read it again and again. I would easily compare it to 'Sophie's Choice' which although fiction, was deep and personal in the way Planaria and Helen's book was, without so many of gruesome details of 'Sophie's Choice.' I am also a big fan of Roberta Kagan's holocaust stories, but again 'Claiming my Place' is so far above them, because of the way it was created and the way it was related and portrayed.I offer deep gratitude and congratulations to Planaria and Helen for creating this beautiful homage to Basia and her story and for sharing it with the world. A big Mazel Tov to you both, if that is appropriate.

Claiming My Place: Coming of Age in the Shadow of the Holocaust by Planaria Price enables readers of all ages to experience the horrors of that terrible time as if we, too, were living in Poland in the 30’s and early 40’s when Hitler came to power. Price has a gift for rendering everyday detail meaningful, and she is able to capture Barbara’s voice as if she were telling her own story directly to us—as if we were sitting in a living room with an old woman recalling the happiness of her early days, which, suddenly transformed into a life of terror. I loved the description of Barbara’s early days in Poland, the care she took about her clothes, her interest in her studies, the delicious food she enjoyed with her family, and then, almost overnight, the destruction of everything and almost everyone she loved. This is a book for young and old alike—a book that should not be overlooked, not only because it helps us remember a terrifying time in history, but also, and perhaps, more significantly, to realize that it could all happen again. I loved this book!

This is a YA, adult cross-over book, that -- unlike many stories--spends time on the rich Jewish life and community of pre-war Poland. Of course, Polish Jews were surrounded by Polish anti-Semites, all too willing to finger their Jewish neighbors to transport to the ghettos. The protagonist, fair haired, and well spoken in German after years at Krakow University, decided the safest thing was to "hide in plain sight" as a Polish worker taking jobs German soldiers formerly performed. She has some close escapes--from bombs as well as Nazis--but survives, and eventually immigrates to America. Read it--for the grit and determination of this young woman who succeeded where six million failed.

Thank you so very much! I lived your book, Planaria! Its content made me sad and happy, happy and sad...in waves! I love your book, Planaria! I will read it again and again! It reminded me of the many stories my mom told me about our family and friends, who went through similar times, during the Nazi invasion. And the time I had to say "good bye" to friends, whom I could never see or be in contact with again, who were forced to leave the country, to go to Israel or to the states, during the "the purification time" of the communist era! That and much more made me leave my native country as well, to find a place to claim as my own, like in "Claiming my place", that was safe and free! Growing up in a country with feelings of despair, inadequacy, incapacity to express my thoughts and being forced to applaud to the ludicrous uneducated-leaders speeches and propaganda, who were destroying our country bit by bit, for their own personal benefits, was to much for me, to bear! I hoped that no more atrocities will be repeated anymore and anywhere in the world! I will not refrain to say: Nevermore, Nevermore, Nevermore...

Totally surprised by this book! While I do have severe ADHD, and struggle with reading anything longer than a couple of pages, I was pleasantly surprised. It was so skillfully written, that it paints such a visual picture and creates an emotional feeling that made it so easy for me to stay with. I appreciate all of the work that went into this book, because now I really feel a bit like I was there - that I have witnessed the experience first-hand. And it feels like it came from the heart of someone who was neither bitter, nor had an “axe to grind” - so I don’t feel like I had to waste energy filtering things out.

The book is well written and an easy read. Very interesting story told in the first person so that it like the subject herself is talking directly to you. It is a history that should not be forgotten. The book covers the periods before and during the war as well as the aftermath when the Displaced tried to return to their hometowns in Poland. I have not read anything about what happened to the returning Polish Jews before. A sad chapter in Polish history.

I started reading the book this morning at the dentist office. I fed the kids and I am back in bed reading. I can't put it down. I love genealogy but this is so much more.....I can feel her heart and soul....Amazing!

Wow, what an inspiring and gripping story! The courage of Barbara, the main character, in the face of the worst act of humanity in modern history is powerful. And the details in the book - the author's writing really helped me feel like I was there with Barbara every step of the way.
