Excellent read!! The author explains everything you ever need to know about vitamin D but didn't even realize you need to know!! He is Very thorough and persuasive. But I do believe the author is too conservative in the amounts he recommends. My daughter has MS and she takes a whopping 50,000 i.u daily. My husband and I take 20,000 i.u. daily. (Along with vitamin k as well, of course. Vitamin k guides calcium to the bones so there is zero risk on D toxcisity) I've read several books and articles about D, but this book is the most well-written and comprehensive one.
I ordered this book to extensively educate myself on vitamin D and I was overwhelmed by the comprehensive information that was presented by the author! I already knew some of the basics but this book educated me on virtually everything on this vital vitamin. You will learn how vitamin D prevents different chronic diseases and how supplementing can prevent an array of health ailments which is life changing. If you want to be healthier and want to learn more about the wonderful benefits of vitamin D then you will not be disappointed by this book!
It used to be the general consensus that vitamin D was important for healthy bones, which one needs to receive from sun exposure, but it is now being discovered that this little-known vitamin is running our genes in a thousand different ways. In other words, Vitamin D, the sunshine hormone, is regulating 5% of the metabolic processes happening inside of our body. What led me to read the "Power of Vitamin D" was watching a YouTube video by Dr. Rhonda Patrick, whose research explained vitamin D as an important hormone that organs, tissues, and cells need to function properly. I learned from watching her videos that vitamin D receptors are in every tissue in the body, going so far as penetrating deeper into our DNA. These critical pieces of information fueled my interest in vitamin D, which lead me to Dr. Zaidi's book.Reading Zaidi's Power of Vitamin D validated the essential need of vitamin D. A self-proclaimed vitamin D expert, Zaidi extends his analysis of vitamin D beyond the U.S. to find answers through research published in other countries on how vitamin D is vital for health. Dr. Zaidi uses published controlled experimental studies as his evidence to explain the power of vitamin D in preventing dozens of diseases, and I was perturbed to have learned that 70% are Americans and much of the world are deficient in this essential vitamin. This book is especially important for someone of my phenotype. I am not fair skinned and I live in a northern climate, leaving me much more susceptible to vitamin D deficiency. Now knowing the insurmountable health surpluses and later disease prevention from adequate levels of vitamin D, this book has become one of the major sources in making life changes. I'll be sure to take the recommended supplements. Left satisfied with the knowledge gained, I will continually review this book as a personal reference.
This is one of the better books on Vitamin D - good research and facts. I'd recommend it over many other mediocre ones.
This is, I think, the third book on the importance of Vitamin D in our lives that I've read recently. And I have to say this was the best written of them all. Though not as personable as the others, the design with the references at the end of each chapter, made it so much easier to get through. I could use the text-to-speech to save my eyes the strain and merely turn that feature off to page down to the next chapter without hearing long streams of numbers, dates, and names. This was probably the most conservative of the books. Doctor Sarfraz Zaidi tended to recommend far less Vitamin D than the other authors had. He did admit, though, that there were very few studies of actual Vitamin D toxicity from overdose, which reflected what I read in the other ebooks about the subject. This would be a great book to start with in researching this important vitamin. It really isn't a vitamin, but a hormone that we are globally deficient in.On a personal note, one doctor told me I was deficient. The next doctor told me I was too high in Vitamin D. So I feel I have first-hand experience with the lack of knowledge that the medical world has. So I have taken the advice of all three books in upping my supplementation of D. I believe that my experience with 'fibromyalgia' is merely my deficiency of Vitamin D. As soon as I can I will have a better view of whether or not this is true. I am being cautious and not taking nearly what was recommended in the other two books. The only variable that concerns me is Summer. I always feel better in the Summer. Hopefully, by next Winter, I will have caught up on the vitamin. Maybe next year I won't be stuck in bed all the time.
Fails to cover much needed vitamin K complex that must be taken with Vitamin D to keep calcium in the bones, and does not propose high enough doses for terminal diseases. Worth reading though.
This book is quite short and to the point. Mainly gives factual information on how Vitamin D deficiency causes illnesses or makes exisiting illnesses worse. I read this after reading Dr. Michael Holick's "Vitamin D Solution" and the author confirms what Holick says.I began supplementing my diet with somewhat high doses of Vitamin D about 10 months ago and so far, I finally have my energy back and can exercise without becoming excessively fatigued. My A1C is at 5.5, which is down from 5.8 (just a few points away from being labelled diabetic) and my bone density has improved quite a bit from 4 years ago. (Just had the test today)While Dr. Zaidi seems to be a genius at self promotion, he is also a knowledgeable endocrinologist and I trust his advice, as I trust Dr. Holick's advice. Both these doctors have been studying Vitamin D for years and they know the research and treat their patients accordingly. Don't be fooled by the AMA's recommendation of 400 i.u.'s a day as adequate! That's not even close! Read the facts and decide for yourself.
