About the Author

Dr. Diane R. Gehart is a Professor in the Marriage, Family, and Therapy and Counseling Programs at California State University, Northridge. She has authored numerous books, including CASE DOCUMENTATION IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY, THEORY AND TREATMENT PLANNING IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY, MINDFULNESS AND ACCEPTANCE IN COUPLE AND FAMILY THERAPY, and MASTERING COMPETENCIES IN FAMILY THERAPY. She also co-edited COLLABORATIVE THERAPY: RELATIONSHIPS AND CONVERSATIONS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE, and has developed two systems for assessing student learning: THE COMPLETE MFT CORE COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT SYSTEM and THE COMPLETE COUNSELING ASSESSMENT SYSTEM. Dr. Gehart's areas of specialty include mindfulness, mental health recovery, postmodern and systemic therapies, sexual abuse treatment, gender issues, children and adolescents, client advocacy, qualitative research, and education in family therapy. I bought the electronic version this book for a course. The only thing that I do not like is that I have a new chromebook laptop and I am not able to download the book in order to read it. I cannot read it online through the cloud either. There are no fixes that I have been able to find thus far, so I am stuck reading it on my phone. I wish that I would have known this ahead of time so that I could have bought the paper copy so that I could access it whenever I needed to.

I am an MFT student and this book is an amazing resource! It's written in a tone unlike any other textbook I have ever read. It's very conversational but so full of great information. Pay careful attention to the websites listed as resources, there are some free extras that go along with owning this book.

I just received this text on Tuesday. Prior to this text--I was struggling with reading the cold, dense, lifeless texts of a test prep company.What a breath of relief, when I opened Diane Gehart's Mastering Competencies in Family Therapy. I had previewed it on Amazon's "Look Inside" link, and was drawn to its layout and catchy headings. Also I heavily used her co-authored, easy to assimilate Theory-Based Treatment Planning For Marriage and Family Therapists to study for my master's program comprehensive exam so I expected her solo written book to be just as easy to navigate. (Actually it appears she had some help from content experts--like the section on ethics written by a lawyer).I just completed chapters one to three--so I'll give you my review up to this point. Reading this book is like seeing the model of our beliefs as system/relationally thinking therapists applied in written form. It feels as if the text, the author is relating to me--I feel like I'm in a relationship with the author, and she really cares that I get this material. Her definition on negative vs. positive feedback pp. 39-40 is the most user friendly framing of the concept that I've seen and I like that she gives me a heads up--that those concepts can be tricky. She also makes these little comments in parenthesis for example on p. 12 in commenting about libraries she says, "Oh I forgot, no one steps foot in these places anymore; I meant 'surf' the library's web page while still in your bunny slippers." See--Gehart is talking to the reader and building rapport from a book--so cool!Gehart's headings for each model are framed in a down-to-earth, conversational manner. For example here are the first three subsections: "In a Nutshell: the Least You Need to Know," "The Juice: Significant Contributions in the Field," and "Rumor Has It: The People and Their Stories." The last subsection listed--feels so relational and human to describe talking about the key theorists of a model as "Rumors!" and doesn't that subheading pique your interest vs. the dry subheading "Key Figures."From pp. 49-54, Gehart's tables compare schools and models right out of the gate, which helps me to see how the theories relate. She also ties each section to diversity issues.In chapter 3 where Gehart talks about practitioners trying out theories until they find one to adopt she refers to it as dating and marrying a theory. These playful metaphors (is that the right term?) make the concepts easier for me to remember.The other reason I was attracted to purchasing this text--(and now that I've received the book--wow!)--were the sections at the end of the chapters of sample case conceptualizations, clinical assessments, treatment plans and progress notes--that gives concrete application of the theories, including writing progress notes from each model's perspective. This section of the chapter will help me get a greater understanding of the real-life application of the models.With this book--I'm experiencing it as being taught not just facts, but how to think relationally, systemically. I am hoping that this text will help me to get motivated to cuddle up with it daily--and get excited about putting in the time in to study for my licensing exam.I'm completely infatuated with this book--and it's looking good that I might fall completely in love!

Incredible book filled with compilations of theories! So much to learn from this book. I wish this was the first one that I had received when I began my studies in Marriage and Family Therapy. It would have made it that much easier for me to learn and utilize the various theoretical modalities in training and internship. I high recommend this book for those who want a real good handle on the different psychological theories. Great book!

I have only finished the first three and the last four chapters of the book. However, so far this has been one of the best reads for a textbook throughout my educational career. The author writes to the student in languages they can understand. They present the information in an interesting way which keeps the readers interest. I would recommend this book to everyone taking MFT, even if it is not an assigned reading.

By far, the best textbook. I am in graduate school for Mental health Counseling and this textbook breaks down the topics of each chapter in a way that is not intimidating and evermore engaging. You are active throughout the entire text. It actually got me pumped to enter in my family counseling course.

GREAT BOOK FOR THEORY AND PRACTICE!

I give it 5 stars because it's an amazing body of work HOWEVER I sent it back because I wanted it to study for the national exam and her book needs to be updated to the current DSM -5.
