I am a foreigner in Wisconsin. Barns have always had a sense of mystery to me, they were these beautiful and giant buildings scattered around the beautiful countryside of Wisconsin, and were imposing in every respect, but beyond that I had little understanding of them.I first saw this book at one of the store fronts in a building managed by the Wisconsin Historical Society. After yearning to buy this book for a long time, but not knowing if I will read this, or if it will be worth the money, I finally caved in.The book lived up to and over my expectations. It immortalises the barns through numerous pictures both taken by the authors as well as ones from other sources including the Wisconsin historical society. But the book is not just pictures. It provides A LOT OF INFORMATION about the barns, their history, their unique features, their construction, their uses, information about silos, corn-cribs, barn restoration efforts, noteworthy barns in Wisconsin etc, and is as much a treatise on the history of country living and a comprehensive work on barns. I know so much about a barn today, can tell the style from the roof, is drawn to the materials of construction, the silo, and overall have a holistic understanding, and an immense sense of appreciation for the barn, exclusively thanks to this book.I highly recommend it. It is well worth the time and the money!! And I bow my head in respect to Jerry Apps for compiling this work !!
I found this to be a very comprehensive history of farm architecture in Wisconsin; how the style of barn differed with the culture of the immigrant who built it. What features worked best, why particular materials were used, and why certain designs were favored was quite interesting. As I watch barns disappearing from our landscape, I appreciate the true gems we still have left and applaud those owners who are doing all they can to restore and retain them.
There is just a certain allure and charm to the barns of old. So many different styles and looks. Not at all any set shape or size which makes them so wonderful. I love this book.
Jerold (Jerry) Apps was a member of my doctoral "committee" at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1973. I admire his philosophy of adult education, his philosophy of life, and............. Fascinating book. I learned so much about barns, how they are built, and the different styles of barns that have been built at different times to serve changing agricultural needs. The book contains beautiful pictures and helpful diagrams. An excellent resource for anyone interested in rural Midwestern American!
Wonderful, absorbing book esp. if you grew up around dairy farm here in Wisconsin. Gave as a gift to music professor who lived/worked on farm before college years. He cherishes it.
Excellent history of Wisconsin barns. I enjoyed each and every page. You can't go wrong with Jerry Apps.
I have traveled thru a lot of farm country of Wisconsin and love to see these old barns still in use today. These buildings will forever be a part of rural America's history. This book is great.
