Review
Praise for The Dharma of the Princess Bride"A book filled with important insights, humility, and wonderful humor."―Christopher Guest"A glorious book: a wise, pragmatic toolkit for creating meaningful relationships with friends, in romance, and with family. Reading it is like a warmhearted friend taking your hand and helping you figure out how to live."―Sharon Salzberg"This powerful book inspired me to start meditating again. If I had read it before getting into a miserable relationship with someone who LOVED The Princess Bride, I'd probably like the movie too."―Duncan Trussell, host of The Duncan Trussell Family Hour"Examples from both [The Princess Bride] and [Ethan Nichtern's] personal life add warmth to this study of relationships and Buddhist philosophy. Fans of the movie will want to see it again armed with Nichtern's insights."―Candace Smith, Booklist"Fans of popular films who are also drawn to Buddhist principles will find much to enjoy here as Nichtern's deconstruction of the plot skillfully and clearly teases out well-defined lessons―his ruminations on friendship through the relationship of Fezzik and Inigo Montoya are a highlight . . . For those who seek meaning, love, and values, even in unorthodox places, this unusual work will come as a pleasant surprise."―Publishers Weekly"Ethan Nichtern brings Buddhist wisdom to bear on the topics of love, friendship, and relationships through a pop culture lens that is simple irresistible." ―Lodro Rinzler, author of Love Hurts and The Buddha Walks into a Bar"How can I not read this book!"―Mandy Patinkin, a.k.a. Inigo Montoya

I couldn't put this book down, a real gem of contemporary relationship advice. Ethan Nichtern, a senior Buddhist teacher, self-proclaims that he is "not a relationship expert" because relationships inherently involve more than one person. In his book, he expresses clearly and eloquently his view on friendships, romance, and familial relationships in the 21st century. He deftly weaves the three seemingly unrelated themes: the seminal 1980s film The Princess Bride, Buddhist and "Buddh-ish" wisdom, and stories from his own experiences from childhood to his thirties in order to share timeless advice and insight on how to connect with people genuinely in an era where we all seem to be ever more distracted from that depth.Perfect for Buddhists, pop-culture fans, and anyone who ever feels like they experience challenges navigating relationships with other people.
I fell in love with The Princess Bride in college. It became one of those movies that my oldest friends still quote again and again. I have also been a huge fan of Ethan since I first saw him speak a couple of years ago. So when I heard that he was releasing a book about Buddhist Dharma and the Princess Bride, I immediately pre-ordered it.I was expecting a fun book with lots of references to one of my favorite films, and I definitely got that. What I wasn't expecting was for this to be a book that hit home so profoundly. The chapter "There Is No Buttercup" is the best articulation I have read on desire and suffering. It took something very theoretical and brought it home in the context of being single in New York City. This books is a MUST READ in you are DATING in NYC!
Ethan Nichtern's new book reveals a Metamodernist Buddhism I can wholeheartedly endorse!I've been a student of Buddhism (i.e., academic Comparative Religion/Psychology of Religious Experience) since the 60's. Recently a friend introduced me to Nichtern's "The Road Home," and I've been following his work ever since. This book's interplay of culture analysis, and timeless wisdom reveals a Buddhism I want to live, and well as study.
Ethan relates this Dharma tale on many levels. Like a New York Deli everyone can find something to nibble on, digest and grow with.
I can't say enough nice things about this book. It's exactly what I needed to read and the authors insight is perfection
No more rhyming, and I mean it.Anybody want a peanut?
If you simply want to learn how to love, family, friends and others on a new level through a character study of The Princess Bride - this book is a MUST READ! Ethan Nichtern is clearly a well established expert on Buddhism. He has also watched The Princess Bride enough times to expertly and humorously tie it together to Buddhist teachings. I found the book delightful to read and simply couldnt put it down. It was funny, tender, sweet and informative and very unique. Ive already passed it on to my 15 year old daughter who cant put it down either.
Wonderful book!!! Loved it!!!
